CHAPTER 56 OF 120
EXAM WEATHER
Exam weather was perfect. This offended everyone. The sky turned bright blue. The sea became calm. The courtyards warmed under early summer sun. And first-years were told to sit indoors reviewing controlled magical output. Harper stared through the Foundations window.
"Cruel."
Professor Elowen said, "The weather was not scheduled to annoy you."
"Prove it."
"No."
Year One exams were small compared with older years. Written knowledge. Practical control. Safety procedures. No ranking posted publicly. Students still panicked. Ava created revision cards for the entire room. Jasper told her she did not need to. She said she knew. Harper used them while claiming not to. Bag Bed became exam headquarters. The surviving historical objects were pushed into one chest. Three students spread notes across the mattress.
"What is the first response to uncontrolled heat charm?" Ava asked.
Harper replied, "Stop casting."
"Then?"
"Move flammable stuff."
"Then?"
"Tell teacher."
"Good."
Harper pointed at Jasper.
"What is the first response to sea god?"
Ava said, "Not on exam." Jasper answered anyway.
"Don't assume."
Harper nodded.
"Correct."
The written exam was easier than fear made it. Explain two reasons magical control matters. Identify three signs a ward is active. Describe safe behaviour on a working dock. Jasper wrote too much on that one. The practical exam was harder. Students entered the hall individually. Jasper waited outside with Harper and Ava. Harper bounced one knee.
"Stop," Ava said.
"I can't."
"You're shaking the bench."
"Good. Everyone gets my stress."
Ava's name was called first. She disappeared through the door. Fifteen minutes later she returned. Harper jumped up.
"Well?"
Ava said, "Fine."
"That is useless."
"We are not supposed to tell each other the sequence."
"Traitor."
Harper went next. Returned twenty minutes later.
"I didn't explode anything."
Jasper said, "High standard."
"Exactly."
Then Jasper. Professor Elowen and Ward sat at opposite ends of the hall. Five stations. Station one: precision movement. Move three objects to marked positions. Jasper completed two perfectly and set the third slightly outside the ring. Reset. Corrected. Station two: shield response. Moving soft projectiles. He missed one. Recovered. Station three: heat control. Seven degrees. Stopped at eight. Professor Ward said, "Adjust." Good. Station four: layered effect. Light plus levitation. Station five: scenario. No actual student. Small wooden figure.
Jasper lowered the temperature slightly. He had not known cooling by correction would be allowed. His light flickered but stayed. A model dock with a loose rope, active loading line and a simulated student stepping into danger. Jasper had to explain, not cast.
"Warn them. Stop loading operation. Get staff. Don't use magic on the moving rope unless trained because you can change load."
Ward nodded.
"Why not jump in to help?"
Jasper almost laughed.
"Because then there are two people in danger."
"Good."
He left exhausted. Harper and Ava waited.
"Well?"
Jasper smiled.
"Didn't explode anything."
Harper high-fived him. Results arrived two days later. No numbers. Achievement bands and notes. Jasper met expected first-year control with strengths in shielding and adaptive response. Harper met expected control with high output and major growth in restraint. Ava exceeded expected precision and planning, with a note reminding her that adaptation mattered as much as prediction. Harper read all three.
"We are geniuses."
Ava said, "That is not what these say."
"Emotionally it is."
Jasper pinned his note above his bed. Not because it proved he was special. Because months earlier he could barely move a cloth. That progress belonged entirely to him. No Sea involved. He liked that more than he could explain.
