CHAPTER 107 OF 120
THE QUESTION EVERYONE ASKED
By dinner, Jasper's Choosing Tide pause had become school folklore. The stories were already wrong. In one version the basin had frozen solid. In another, all four currents fought over Jasper. A third claimed he had "spoken directly to the ocean" and chosen Brannor himself. Harper heard that one and nearly climbed onto a table. Ava stopped her.
"We can correct people without declaring war on Year Three."
"Can we?"
"Yes."
"Evidence?"
Jasper wanted to disappear. He sat between them at the Brannor table for the first time. The dining hall had not moved. Only seating customs changed slightly after Choosing. First-years were allowed to sit with their new Orders for the final meals of term if they wanted. Jasper did. Then regretted being visible. A second-year leaned across the table.
"What did it say?"
"Nothing."
"But the Sea came in."
"Water noticed me. I think."
"And sent you Brannor?"
"No."
"How do you know?"
Jasper paused. Fair question.
"Because its attention left before the academy current chose."
The second-year frowned.
"You can tell?"
"Usually."
"Can you prove it?"
Ava looked up. Jasper put one hand on her arm before she started a lecture about evidence categories.
"No."
The student sat back.
"Huh."
That answer dissatisfied people. Jasper used it anyway. No, he could not prove Water had withdrawn. No, he could not prove the Sea had no influence after that. No, he did not know why the basin stopped. No, he had not secretly requested Brannor. No, he could not ask Water to repeat it. No, he would not try. By dessert he had answered some version of the same question fourteen times. Priya finally stood and addressed the table.
"New Brannor rule. Stop interrogating the first-year."
A third-year said, "That's not a Brannor rule."
"It is for five minutes."
Jasper silently loved her. After dinner, Thorne asked him to stop by the study. Jasper groaned aloud. Harper said, "Headmaster sequel."
"Do you want us?" Ava asked.
Jasper thought.
"Not yet."
He went alone. Thorne had the Choosing Basin log open on his desk. Technical measurements covered two pages. Flow rates. Gate pressure. Magic levels. Nothing Jasper could interpret.
"Am I in trouble?"
"No."
"Did something break?"
"No."
"Then why do you have that face?"
Thorne looked up.
"I have one face."
"Harper says you have at least four."
"I will treasure the feedback."
He turned the log.
"The academy system stopped responding for eleven seconds."
Jasper blinked.
"Felt longer."
"Most ceremonial discomfort does."
"Was that Water?"
"I cannot prove it."
Jasper almost smiled.
"Good answer."
Thorne's mouth twitched.
"The physical sea gate registered a small pressure increase immediately before the system restarted. That part is measurable."
"So Water pushed it?"
"A wave pushed it."
"You're annoying."
"Precision often is."
Jasper sat.
"I felt Water."
"I believe you."
"It looked at the channels. Or... felt them. I don't know how to say it."
"Did you ask it to choose?"
"No."
"Did you ask for Brannor?"
"No."
"Did you attempt any deliberate contact?"
"No."
Thorne nodded.
"Then you followed the safety guidance."
Jasper waited for the next part.
"That's it?"
"What else would you like?"
"I don't know. An explanation?"
"I do not have one."
There it was again. Not hiding an answer. Not having one. Jasper looked at the log.
"Can I see the measurements?"
Thorne slid the book closer.
"Yes. You may see your own incident record."
Jasper liked the phrasing. The log did not claim to know what the Sea was or why it had moved. It said:, No mechanical gate fault. No system overload. Final placement: Brannor. Simple. Facts separate from interpretation. Ava would be proud.
11.2s interruption in ritual channel flow. External sea pressure +7% at restart. Student reported familiar Titan-presence sensation during pause. Student denied deliberate contact or request. Placement resumed normally after external pressure event.
"Can Harper and Ava see this?"
"If you want them to. It concerns your experience."
"Yeah."
Thorne made a note. Jasper looked toward the darkening window.
"Do you think Water wanted me in Brannor?"
Thorne was quiet.
"My opinion?"
"Yeah."
"I think human beings are extremely skilled at turning meaningful coincidence into stories of intention."
Jasper frowned.
"That sounds like no."
"It sounds like caution."
Thorne folded his hands.
"Water has demonstrated choices around you. That does not mean every event involving water is its choice. The academy ritual placed you in Brannor. Water appears to have noticed the process. Beyond that, I would rather leave a blank space than write a false answer."
Jasper nodded. That was enough. At the door, Thorne said, "Congratulations, by the way." Jasper looked back.
"You didn't say that earlier."
"I was busy watching the basin stop."
"Fair."
"Brannor suits you."
Jasper waited.
"That is not a mystical statement," Thorne added.
"I know."
"Good."
Back in Room Fourteen, Harper and Ava demanded the whole conversation. Jasper showed them the log later. Ava read every number. Harper read only the final line. Final placement: Brannor.
"Best part."
Ava said, "The external pressure measurement is more interesting."
"Wrong."
Jasper lay back on his bed. Let them argue. For the first time, he did not feel any need to solve what Water had meant before sleeping. The question could survive the night.
